According to Trend Forecaster Ellen Gefen, over-the-top opulence is coming to high-end design at the High Point Furniture Market in late March along with European, Moroccan, Spanish and Italian influences at all price ranges. Evident will be finely crafted details and by-gone era, Hollywood-inspired luxury. Traditional looks will be more clean lined, yet still sophisticated.classic with shapes and new finishes having a fresh influence. Some manufacturers will be using higher sheens on distressed pieces or lacquer finishes. Blue and brown combinations will still be popular. Colors in general will be less intense but richer and more glamorous.

In a trade article for the High Point Furniture Market coming in late March, Richard Frinier states that the newest trend emerging in home décor is creating a feeling in the home of an ultra-luxe spa and resort experience particularly in outdoor spaces. Manufacturers in response to this trend are creating new spa and/or resort looks in indoor/outdoor furniture, performance textiles (those that can resist the weather outside), special lighting and accessories.

According to Lori Lester in an article in Home Accents Today, a respected trade publication for the home decor industry, the latest design trend in tabletop accessories pays homage to all kinds of birds from peacocks to backyard birds. Even birds' nests with eggs in them are accenting tables in centerpiece designs. Birds are being used to accent napkin rings. The birds perch on both classic and contemporary perches and often have a very playful look.

Traditional styles, more than ever, are getting a dash of modern elements such as exposed legs rather than flirty skirts and microfiber upholstery rather than cotton."

3. A decrease in the use of inexpensive collectibles as decor.

4. The use of social expression on pillows.

Update April 22, 2005

According to the New York Times, chandeliers as a decorating tool are hot. They are not always as formal as before as they have adapted to more casual room décor. The less formal ones come in odd whimsical shapes and materials and often have unusual features such as wooden shades, vintage beads etc. Also, a new look, instead of one table and one chandelier in the dining room, is two tables and two chandeliers in the dining room!

According to Kenneth Brown, the host of HGTV's reDesign show, new design trends are flat screen televisions used without armoires to hold them, and a spa environment in the bathroom including the use of furniture, light dimmers, and stone tile instead of ceramic tile.

Update April 1, 2005

One of the newest decorating trends is the use of bird prints in fabrics for every room of the house, especially in bright colors like parrot green, robin's egg blue and canary yellow. Look for birds to become one of the popular "themes" in decorating this spring and summer, showing up on everything from drapery fabrics, wall art and sculpture to dinnerware and linens. Birds being used are not only your backyard robin and bluebird, but also more exotic birds such as macaws, cranes, cockatoos, peacocks and flamingoes.

News from the Maison & Objet show in Paris: The home as a luxurious escape was a major theme. There was lots of glitz and glam including fancy pillows in velvet with gold embroidery and lights with strands of Swarovski crystals. Another theme was the use of black as the new neutral for furniture, lighting and tabletop.

Update January 28, 2005

According to an article in the Arizona Republic on January 27, 2005, Levolor Window Fashions has suggested the following trends for 2005:

“• Scandinavian spa: Homes will be clutter-free and scaled down. Colors will include cream, taupe and slate shades.

• Cultural collectibles: Natural and worldly. Rattan, bamboo, twine, giraffe and leopard prints, peacock feathers, leather and wood will be prominent.

• Mod squad: Large-scale florals, bows, buckles, checks, dots, swirls, paisleys, black-and-white stripes and round shapes will be popular.

• Vibrant originals: Rustic, aged and lived-in. Here will be a mix of family heirlooms, antiques, flea-market finds and Americana.

• Delicate decadence: Satin, silk, velvet, lace, faux fur, snakeskin, crystal beads, frosted glass, lacquer and other exquisite materials will be prevalent. “

Handmade and handcrafted designs are becoming very important as people are tired of the impersonality of previous design. The American public is craving pieces with a human touch. Trims, braiding and embroidery are enriching the handcrafted look.
